What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a common dental procedure to save your natural teeth when decay has reached the pulp, or root, of the tooth.

How is a Root Canal Performed?

The decayed pulp is removed from the tooth and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This procedure involves local anesthesia, depending on the treatment required. We may also provide nitrous oxide analgesia as indicated. You will be able to drive home after the treatment, and will likely be comfortable returning to your normal activities.

What Happens After Treatment?

After your root canal therapy, a record of the treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should plan a follow-up restoration within a few weeks of the procedure. Your restorative dentist will then decide what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for a patient to experience any complications after routine endodontic treatment. To prevent further decay, you should continue to practice good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly.

How Much Will It Cost?

The cost of the procedure will depend on the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. However, endodontic treatment is far less expensive than tooth removal or tooth replacement.
